Dr. Abdul Abdulwaheed

D.M.D., A.B.G.D., M.A.G.D., F.A.A.H.D PRESIDENT & CHIEF OF ORAL REHABILITATION

Dr. Abdul came from a family of Physician innovators who were active in Public Health. His grandfather, an ophthalmologic surgeon, served the Flying Tigers in WWII, and after the war, stayed behind in China to serve the needy. His mother, a nurse, and his father an orthopedic surgeon, continued to serve the cause of public health. Dr. Abdul refers to his parents as heroes who groomed him to love the art and science of Medicine. He is fluent in Chinese, both Cantonese and Mandarin.

Dr. Abdul’s scientific career started in high school where he was introduced to a very rigorous curriculum of both the physical and social sciences. Growing up in Hong Kong, a multi-cultural territory of Britain and now China, he had a unique opportunity to learn and experience the most diverse of cultures.

At age seventeen, he attended Tufts University where he studied Chemical Engineering, Bio-Medical Engineering, and Biology. After completing a Bachelors Degree, he went on to study Applied Physics at the graduate level. His interests were to investigate advances in medical imaging modalities such as the CT, MRI, and PET. At the same time, he was trained to perform tissue culture experimentation. Specifically, he worked on the relationships between cortisone, a stress-related hormone, with neural (nerve cell) tissue development.

After gaining expertise in the Biological and Engineering Sciences, he felt the urge to apply the knowledge that he had earned into helping others.

Dr. Abdul commenced his Doctoral training at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, where he continued to excel in developing public health initiatives while also pursuing research. He had the honor of training under Dr. Eleni Gagari, a Harvard trained oral pathologist. Under her supervision, he worked on Distraction Osteogenesis, a procedure used in developing human bone. His research earned him numerous first place awards both within Tufts and nationally.

Additionally, he developed the Boston Chinatown Outreach program, where he worked tirelessly to help the diverse Boston Chinatown Community improve its access to oral health care. Initially, without any sponsors, he provided life-saving oral cancer screenings to thousands of residents. His program developed numerous seminars, some within the New England Medical Center, to educate the public about oral health and its relationship with total health. To emphasize preventative health, he initiated an after-school Dental program. For his work, Dr. Abdul was honored as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Senior Award and by Tufts University with the Presidential Award for Global Citizenship.

Subsequently, Dr. Abdul was accepted into a postdoctoral fellowship program at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. There he served as Resident in Dentistry for both the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Concurrently, he served as a Clinical Fellow in General Dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. After graduating, he was appointed Associate Surgeon to both the Brigham and the Brookside Community Health Center.

Dr. Abdul’s education did not end with Harvard or Tufts. He became one of the youngest Doctors to have earned both a Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry and Fellowship in the American Association of Hospital Dentists.

He also earned Dentistrys highest honors when he became a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry.

Dr. Abdul’s goal in starting Lux was to provide oral health care and access to care for all. He is adamant about the concept that exceptional care should NOT be limited by socio-economic boundaries, and he aspires to transform his dream into a reality for all. Besides continuing his training, he is working tirelessly to secure dental care for those who are most vulnerable. Through community organizations and through his involvement in health policies, he hopes to change the landscape of oral health in the United States.

Dr. Riti Kanthan

D.M.D. Clinical Director of Lux Dental for Kids (Saugus)

Dr. Kanthan is a General Dentist who graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She was born and raised in New Jersey, where her combined passion for artistry and science drew her towards a career in dentistry. Dr. Kanthan attended Tufts for her B.S. in Biology, during which time she fell in love with Boston and decided to pursue her dental education in that cozy city. While in dental school, Dr. Kanthan volunteered at the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center as a high school math and science tutor, which solidified her interest in community service and activism. In her final year, she earned the Tufts Merit Scholarship and completed an externship at the North Shore Community Health Center in Salem, MA. The warmth of the patients and staff in Salem convinced Dr. Kanthan that she had chosen the perfect profession.

In her spare time, Dr. Kanthan enjoys cooking and baking unnecessarily complicated recipes, feeding them to her trusting family, and sporadically posting the evidence to her food blog. When not in the kitchen, she can be found either hiking mountains in New Hampshire or binge-watching television from under a pile of blankets.

Dr. Rafael Quintanar

D.M.D

Dr. Quintanar (or Dr. Q for short) was born and raised in Dallas, TX before moving up to New England for college. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry at Harvard College and fell in love with Boston living. After working for a year at Harvard in an administrative role, Dr. Q completed his dental training at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He truly enjoyed learning not only the technical aspects of the profession but also how to provide quality care to address his patients’ needs, and working with them to achieve their dental health goals.When he is not working in the Cambridge and Quincy offices, Dr. Q enjoys figure skating and following skating competitions, singing with a community chorus, reading as many books as he can fit on his shelves, and watching late-90s TV shows on Netflix.

Dr. Melody Hwang

D.M.D. , M.S. PERIODONTIST

Dr. Melody Hwang was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She moved to the United States when she was twelve years old. She received her B.A in Molecular and Cellular Biology from UC Berkeley. During college, she volunteered in the Berkeley Free Clinic as a student assistant, during which she was able to see the impact dentistry can have on patients’ quality of life. She received her D.M.D degree from University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While in school, she had the opportunities to participate in various community service programs, including clinics that offer free dental care to veterans and children in need.
Dr. Hwang completed a three-year residency program in Periodontology at Boston University school of Dental Medicine, after which she was awarded Diplomate status by the America Board of Periodontology, one of the highest recognition of achievement by the specialty. She is trained to provide a wide range of periodontics treatments, including guided tissue regeneration, guided bone regeneration, internal and external sinus lift, dental implant placement, and soft tissue grafting.Dr. Hwang is currently appointed clinical assistant professor at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine, where she provides clinical supervision at the pre-doctoral periodontics clinic.
Outside of the office, Dr. Hwang enjoys watching movie, enjoying music, and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Mahua Bose

Dr. Mahua Bose Pillai grew up in India. She pursued her dream of helping people and alleviating pain by becoming a Dentist. She graduated with aBachelors in Dental Surgery (BDS), India. She then continued her Post Graduate Dental Education by joining the Department of Endodontics to pursue her Masters in Dental Surgery(MDS). After finishing her MDS degree, she practiced as a consultant Endodontist in multiple private clinics which gave her a better and more realistic approach to treat her patients and build a good patient-doctor relationship before moving to the US.To further her dental career in the US, she joined the DDS degree program at the University of California San Francisco. She was elected as the social chair for the DDS Class of 2016, as the AGD secretary and also as the class representative for ASDA for 2 years. She has also been awarded the Nguyen T. Nguyen Scholarship, University of California San Francisco, May 2016, a Scholarship awarded for extraordinary achievement and excellence in Endodontics.

After receiving her DDS from UCSF, she got into the prestigious Masters in Medical Sciences (MMSc) program in Endodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
She is devoted to helping the underserved and has participated in several dental camps in rural areas in the past and has been actively involved in the community dental clinic at UCSF. Aside from dentistry, she also has two Bachelors degrees in Music. She plays the “Hawaiian Guitar” and has performed as an artist on All India Radio and National Television.Her varied experiences and international dental experience enable her to relate to patients of all walks of life. Dr. Gyusik Cho

D.M.D Periodontist

Our new periodontist is Dr. Gyusik Cho. Dr. Cho hails from Maryland and attended Georgetown University, New York University School of Dentistry and received his specialty education in periodontics at Boston University School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Cho specializes in full periodontal health, extractions, bone grafting, implant placement and exposure, soft tissue grafting procedures, scaling/root planing, biopsies, osseous surgery and many other surgical procedures.

Dr. Cho lives in Boston and loves the South Shore and Cape areas. We are happy and honored to have Dr. Cho part of the Canal Side family.

Dr. Julia Solarewicz

Dr. Julia Solarewicz is a highly accomplished orthodontist with a diverse academic background and extensive research experience. She holds a MSD in Orthodontics from Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, complemented by a DDS from New York University College of Dentistry. Prior to her dental education, Julia earned an MS in Physiology from Wayne State University School of Medicine and a BS in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan. Her research has explored topics such as the impact of serotonin depletion on respiratory motor function and the effects of e-cigarette aerosol on oral health.

In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Julia is a Board Certified Orthodontist with certifications including Clear Aligner Advanced Residency Education and The Aligner Intensive Fellowship. Dr. Julia’s expertise in orthodontics is extensive, encompassing a wide range of advanced procedures aimed at enhancing dental aesthetics and function. She is proficient in traditional braces, utilizing both metal and ceramic brackets to correct dental alignment. Additionally, Dr. Julia excels in the use of clear aligner systems like Invisalign, employing these innovative technologies to treat malocclusions with precision and discretion. She excels in Phase I treatments such as palatal expansion for correcting jaw discrepancies and is adept in managing complex orthognathic surgery cases, collaborating closely with maxillofacial surgeons to achieve optimal facial harmony and functional occlusion for her patients.

Driven by a passion for research, education, and community outreach, Dr. Julia Solarewicz is a leader in the field of orthodontics. Her commitment to advancing dental care and enhancing patient outcomes is reflected in her clinical excellence and dedication to ongoing professional development.

Bio: Camila was born in Brazil and raised in the United States. She completed her Dental Hygiene Bachelor degree in 2014 at MCPHS University. Camila always had a passion for dentistry since she was a child as her father was a dentist. Camila loves being a Dental Hygienist and taking the time to educate her patient on oral hygiene/health. She is caring and strives for a good dental experience in every appointment. Camila is also fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and can communicate in Albanian.

Camila enjoys spending time with her family and friends. On her spare time, she loves pampering herself with skincare, makeup, spa treatments. Sports are also a favorite thing to watch or play. Soccer is her favorite sport, so she never misses the World Cup season. Volleyball is also a sport she enjoys playing.

Vy Ha

Registered Dental Hygienist

Vy joined Lux Dental Inc in 2018 after attending Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science. She is radiology and CPR certified and has her anesthesia license. She grew up in Vietnam and loves seeing a familiar face as a patient. She is workaholic and loves to work 7 days a week. She used to be a nails technician while she was in school. Now she is enjoying going to the gym in her free time. She is a funny hygienist in our Quincy office. Vy is working full time here now, so come to have your teeth cleaned with her!

For the past four years, Caitlin has been working in the Portland, ME community, traveling to rural areas of Maine to provide dental screenings, sealant applications, and educating individuals on oral healthcare. On campus, Caitlin lead an interprofessional team that traveled to local nursing homes that was composed of dental hygiene, pharmacy, nursing, and occupational therapy students. The team educated the staff on the importance of oral hygiene and its impact on your overall health. This past January, Caitlin presented a poster at the Yankee Dental Conference: “What treatment modalities are the most effective at treating peri-implantitis (PI)?”. When she is not in the office she loves to do yoga, go to the beach, and travel. Caitlin holds her Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of New England.
